Ocado-Asda partnership breaks grocery stalemate

Ocado's partnership with Asda may finally break the stalemate in online grocery shopping that has plagued the UK retail sector. The online grocer has struggled to transition from its unprofitable roots to becoming a technology provider, despite its ambitions. Ocado's market capitalization now sits below £2 billion, less than a tenth of the peak it achieved in 2021.

Online grocery operations have proven challenging for supermarkets. McKinsey estimates these services can turn typical 4.4% margins into negative 13% due to added costs like in-store pickers and delivery drivers. Previous partners including Kroger and Sobeys have scaled back their commitments. The UK's online grocery penetration remains modest at 12%, creating a cycle where demand stays muted until services become more efficient.

The Asda deal represents a potential breakthrough for Ocado, especially considering Asda is the UK's cheapest grocer. Ocado is offering productivity tools like algorithms to speed up human stock pickers. Each new client providing better online service could increase customer demand and encourage further supermarket investment. Ocado shares remain down 15% over the past year, suggesting investors remain skeptical of the technology provider's turnaround prospects.
