In the autumn of 2010 Liverpool Football Club was staring into a bleak winter after slipping into the Premier League relegation zone, prompting protests against the indebted American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett. Just days later John Henry sealed a £300mn takeover, wiping out the debt and pledging to win.

Under John Henry, Liverpool won two Premier League titles, England’s domestic cups and the Uefa Champions League, while revenues rose from about £184mn in 2010‑11 to over £700mn in 2024‑25.

Earlier this year a consortium led by Amit Bhatia, with backing from Jeff Bezos, Eduardo Saverin and the Mittal family, acquired a stake valuing Liverpool at more than $7bn, a record that eclipses the $6.3bn Manchester United valuation.

Under Jürgen Klopp, appointed in 2015, Liverpool’s high‑energy style and data‑driven recruitment built a squad featuring stars such as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, while stadium expansion boosted capacity to 61,000, almost tripling match‑day revenue. Although the club faced criticism for its role in the failed European Super League and rising ticket prices, its loyal fan base and global brand keep it financially resilient.
