Humanitarian worker deaths in South Sudan this year have surpassed the total for all of 2025, according to the European Union. A deadly attack on a United Nations mission patrol on Monday killed two peacekeepers, and the number of humanitarian workers and contractors killed since January has risen to 36, compared with 31 in all of 2025. The EU delegation and the embassies of Germany, France and the Netherlands said in a statement Tuesday that the attack underscores the growing dangers faced by aid workers in the region.

The incident occurred on the streets of Juba, South Sudan, where a UN mission vehicle was targeted. The rising toll reflects escalating violence and insecurity hampering humanitarian operations across the country.
