Sazerac Co. is in talks to acquire German schnapps maker Berentzen-Gruppe AG, as the US spirits firm pushes to add brands in Europe. Sazerac, which makes Southern Comfort whiskey and Buffalo Trace bourbon, has entered negotiations to acquire Berentzen, the German company said in a statement, confirming an earlier Bloomberg News report. For Sazerac, it marks the second deal in Europe this month.

A representative for Sazerac declined to comment. Berentzen’s shares climbed 7.3% in German trading, the most in almost two years. The firm has a market cap of €35.2 million ($38.9 million).

Berentzen traces its roots to 1758. Its brands include Berentzen Apfelkorn, Puschkin Vodka, Hansen Rum and Doornkaat. The company also sells non-alcoholic beverages in Germany and neighboring countries, according to its website.

Sazerac completed its acquisition of UK-based spirits maker Au Vodka earlier this month. The company is expanding at a time of weak demand across the alcohol industry, with companies struggling to offload underperforming brands.
