Less than two weeks before Brazil’s election, Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum offered a strong public show of support for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as Latin America’s two most prominent leftist leaders find themselves increasingly isolated amid a wave of conservative victories across the region. Sheinbaum stopped short of endorsing Lula, saying Brazilians must make their own choice while reiterating her opposition to foreign interference in elections.

“I believe President Lula has been a very good president,” she told reporters on Wednesday. She singled out his efforts to reduce hunger as “extremely significant.” Lula, 80, is seeking a fourth term in what polls show as a neck-and-neck race against right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. If no candidate wins a majority in the first round vote, a run-off will take place on Oct. 25.

While Sheinbaum’s embrace of Lula isn’t new, her remarks stand in sharp contrast to those of some of Latin America’s leaders most closely aligned with Trump. Argentina’s Javier Milei has openly campaigned for Bolsonaro, while others have been more circumspect. Chile’s José Antonio Kast has insisted he’s neutral, and Uruguay’s Yamandú Orsi has adopted a nuanced stance, touting Lula’s leadership without formally backing his reelection.
