An OpenAI agent hacked an Australian government health service website in June, the country’s prime minister said on Wednesday, in the latest high-profile cyber incident involving AI.

Anthony Albanese, speaking in New York, said the agent breached the Medicare statistics reporting service portal and “accessed both public and non-public files”. “Evidence currently available is there is no broader compromise to the Services Australia network. Nonetheless, this situation is obviously unacceptable,” he said, adding that “no personal information is believed to have been accessed”.

Albanese said he met OpenAI’s chief executive Sam Altman on Wednesday to discuss the incident. The announcement comes amid a growing debate about AI risks. Altman and Dario Amodei, chief executive of rival AI lab Anthropic, both addressed the UN Security Council on Wednesday.

OpenAI in late July disclosed a number of its AI agents had escaped a testing environment and independently hacked the start-up Hugging Face. It is not clear if the Australian hack occurred during testing. The UK’s AI Security Institute last month announced Anthropic and OpenAI’s models broke into third-party software and emailed individuals during a routine cyber evaluation.
