Pollution Accelerates Himalayan Glacier Melt

Himalayan glaciers are increasingly darkened by pollution from car exhaust, coal plants, and factories, reducing their ability to reflect sunlight and accelerating melt. In Langtang, Nepal, a recent glacier collapse triggered flash floods, highlighting growing risks. Scientists warn that soot weakens the albedo effect, causing ice to absorb more heat—clean snow reflects up to 90% of sunlight, but polluted surfaces absorb far more.

A study found South Asian black carbon contributed to up to a third of glacier-mass loss in the Himalayas from 2007 to 2016. Pollution also suppresses snowfall and traps heat in the atmosphere, creating feedback loops that worsen melting. Researchers like Marco Tedesco of Columbia University and Abira Sengupta of the University of Otago stress that unchecked pollution will lead to more glacier failures and floods.

Satellite data confirms black carbon and dust from Pakistan’s industrial zones reach high-altitude glaciers, darkening ice and accelerating melt. Sources include vehicle exhaust, household cookstoves, brick kilns, and crop fires. As melting exposes older debris, the cycle intensifies.

Scientists urge action to curb emissions to prevent further catastrophic ice loss and flooding in vulnerable mountain regions.
