Brazil Introduces Alphanumeric CNPJ for 2026

Brazil’s Receita Federal announced the CNPJ Alfanumérico in July 2026, replacing the numeric identifier with a 14‑character alphanumeric format. The change aims to prevent exhaustion of numbers as the country’s company registry swells, streamlining entity lookup and tightening fraud detection across the economy.

The new structure splits the 14 characters into a 9‑digit root, a 4‑digit order, and a 2‑digit check digit. Validation uses ASCII codes for letters, subtracts 48, and applies a weighted modulus‑11 algorithm. Developers must update parsing logic to accept uppercase letters and reject legacy numeric CNPJs.

Sample implementations in JavaScript, TypeScript, and PHP demonstrate the algorithm, handling mask removal, case normalization, and weight calculation. The code snippets illustrate how to compute two check digits and validate a full identifier, ensuring backward compatibility until the July cutoff.

Organizations should audit existing data pipelines and update validation libraries before July 2026 to avoid runtime failures. The shift also opens opportunities for tighter integration with Brazil’s digital tax ecosystem, enabling automated compliance checks and reducing manual reconciliation costs for businesses.
