WRU Boss Denies Forcing Out Departing Chairman Collier-Keywood

Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) chief executive Abi Tierney firmly rejected suggestions that departing chairman Richard Collier-Keywood was pushed out by the board ahead of his June exit. Collier-Keywood is scheduled to leave following his initial three-year term, a departure that prompted the dropping of a no-confidence vote previously scheduled for an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) this week.

Tierney maintained the decision not to seek a second term was entirely the chairman's personal choice, expressing respect for him finishing a full cycle. She gave personal thanks for his commitment, particularly stepping up to take on more responsibilities when Tierney temporarily stepped away last year while dealing with her cancer diagnosis.

The governing body confirmed the recruitment process for the successor starts in May, while simultaneously doubling down on the controversial plan to reduce the number of Welsh men's professional sides from four to three. Tierney clarified this reduction was a unanimous board decision, not solely Collier-Keywood’s initiative.

Further uncertainty surrounds the future of the regional sides, especially after the WRU confirmed a £6m shortfall in forecasted ticket sales for major upcoming fixtures. The governing body is navigating complex processes, including an exclusive bid period involving Y11 Sport & Media concerning Cardiff, with the next chair inheriting these difficult structural choices.
