World Cup 2026: Dozens of Team Shirts Set to Sit Unused

Up to 18 of the 108 national team shirts released for the 2026 World Cup will likely never see action on the pitch. FIFA has already determined which kits will feature in the 72 group-stage matches, leaving some countries with unused strips despite paying for production and shipping costs. The unused shirts represent a significant waste for manufacturers and federations alike.

Every nation submitted at least two kits following standard home and away conventions, while 12 teams added third shirts in alternative colors. However, FIFA's scheduling decisions mean certain kits won't be needed during the group phase. Both Ghana and Uzbekistan will not wear their home shirts at all in group play, while 11 other nations including Australia, Belgium, and Portugal will sit out their away shirts entirely.

The allocation strategy affects third-kit wearers too, with Ecuador, Haiti, Iraq and Jordan unable to use their alternate strips. Conversely, Canada, Mexico and Panama will rotate through all three of their shirts during group matches, maximizing their kit investment. England and Scotland stick to traditional two-shirt approaches.

This kit shortage reveals how FIFA's match scheduling directly impacts team preparations and equipment budgets. Nations must balance tradition with practicality when selecting their tournament wardrobe.
