Wales Hockey Team Faces Funding Hurdle for World Cup

The Welsh men's hockey team, fresh off a 5-0 World Cup qualifying win over Scotland, faces significant financial challenges to compete on the global stage. Player Jack Pritchard highlighted the difficulties of balancing a part-time hockey program with full-time jobs and studies, noting many players travel from across the UK to train.

Hockey Wales CEO Paul Whapham stated the total cost to prepare for the World Cup is £150,000, a sum they must raise in just four months. This financial burden is substantial for a largely amateur sport with limited resources, as all participation is self-financed with no payment for players attending the tournament.

Despite the financial strain, Whapham hopes the team's qualification will inspire the next generation of players. The team will participate in warm-up matches against England and Australia, followed by games in Spain and against Chile in Cardiff before heading to the Netherlands for their World Cup pool matches. Wales opens its World Cup campaign against India on August 15.
