England secured top spot in Pool D at the Hockey World Cup with a commanding 8-2 victory over Wales, reinforcing their status as serious contenders.

Sam Ward opened the scoring within 73 seconds, followed quickly by Will Calnan. Despite impressive saves from Toby Reynolds-Cotterill, England extended their lead before halftime with goals from Calnan and Tom Sorsby.

In the second half, captain Zach Wallace capitalised on a rebound, and Sam Hooper added another. Henry Croft and Nick Bandurak rounded off the scoring for England, while Gareth Furlong netted two late consolation goals from a penalty stroke and corner.

England dominated possession and earned 14 penalty corners compared to Wales' one. The stark contrast in resources was evident, as most Welsh players balance full-time jobs or studies while funding their own travel, unlike the fully professional English squad.
