Tsegay receives four-month ban after Letrozole test

Ethiopia’s double world champion Gudaf Tsegay received a four-month ban after an out‑of‑competition test revealed the aromatase inhibitor Letrozole. The 29‑year‑old, who claimed 5,000 m gold in 2022 and 10,000 m gold in 2023, tested positive for the drug’s metabolite in December. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) confirmed the finding in late January.

She argued the medication was prescribed for a diagnosed condition and supplied medical documentation. In February Tsegay applied for a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) with World Athletics, which accepted her treatment met WADA’s standards. However, WADA rejected a retroactive TUE on exceptional grounds, prompting a case resolution agreement with the AIU.

The AIU deemed a four‑month ban appropriate, citing no fault or negligence, Tsegay’s prompt admission and the fact that a pre‑approved TUE would have been granted. The suspension runs from 1 June to 30 September, removing the athlete from the upcoming World Championships and reshaping Ethiopia’s medal prospects in distance events.

Tsegay’s case underscores the fine line between medical necessity and anti‑doping compliance. Athletes must secure TUEs before using prohibited substances, or risk sanctions even when treatment is legitimate. The episode may prompt World Athletics to clarify retroactive exemption procedures, ensuring clearer guidance for competitors facing similar health issues. National federations are now urged to track prescriptions closely to avoid future breaches.
