The R&A has introduced a new code of conduct for spectators attending The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale next week, aiming to curb unruly fan behavior. With over 300,000 spectators expected, the 'The Open Commitment' encourages attendees to respect players, the course, and fellow fans, preserving the event's traditions. This move follows incidents at recent major championships, including the Ryder Cup and the U.S. Open, where unsportsmanlike conduct from crowds was reported.

Last year's Open champion, Brian Harman, also faced jeers from home fans during his victory in 2024. World number one Scottie Scheffler recalled hearing "fairly choice words" during his win at Royal Portrush, underscoring the need for improved fan etiquette.

The new code will be communicated through on-course signage and digital channels, emphasizing responsible enjoyment without altering the unique atmosphere of The Open. The R&A's chief executive, Mark Darbon, stated the commitment aims to maintain traditions and ensure a welcoming experience.
