St Helens has named Abi Ekoku, 59, as interim CEO following the departure of Mike Rush in February. Ekoku, a former London Broncos, Halifax, and Bradford winger, previously served as the RFL’s interim chief since October. Rush, who led the club for 27 years, including 13 as CEO, stepped down after a storied career that saw Saints win multiple Super League titles.

Ekoku’s rugby league pedigree includes playing for Bradford during their 1997 Super League victory and later serving as CEO of Bradford, overseeing two Super League Grand Finals and two World Club Challenges. Before rugby, he excelled in athletics, representing England in discus and shot put at the Commonwealth Games. His post-playing career includes roles as Rugby League Players’ Association chair and managing director at Keighley Cougars.

The RFL confirmed its board will finalize interim arrangements before appointing a permanent CEO. Saints chairman Eamonn McManus praised Ekoku’s “wealth of experience in senior administration, commerce, and elite performance,” highlighting his ability to strengthen the club’s brand and commercial performance. RFL chairman Nigel Wood thanked Ekoku for his “diligence and professionalism” in shaping key rugby league decisions over the past seven months.

St Helens aims to build on its legacy under Ekoku’s leadership, leveraging his deep rugby league expertise and strategic vision to drive growth. The club remains focused on balancing sporting success with long-term sustainability as it navigates this transitional period.
