Adam Wilkie, son of Olympic swimming legend David Wilkie, has embarked on an extraordinary challenge to match his father's 1976 Montreal Olympics 200m breaststroke time of two minutes 15.11 seconds. The 33-year-old marketing manager, who hasn't seriously swum since age 18, is giving up his job to train full-time for the next 12 months.

David Wilkie's iconic gold medal performance at the 1976 Montreal Olympics made him one of Britain's most celebrated Olympians. While the world record has improved by about 10 seconds since, his time would still have placed in the top five at last year's British Championships. Adam will train with professional coaches at Aquatics GB facilities, despite having been scared of deep water as a child.

This challenge serves dual purposes: raising money for Sports Aid and honoring his father's memory after David died from cancer in 2024. Adam plans to visit pools where his father competed across Sri Lanka, Scotland, Miami, and Montreal, while seeking advice from his dad's former teammates. Though acknowledging the near-impossibility of matching an Olympic gold medalist's time, Adam views this as a personal journey to feel connected to his father and demonstrate the incredible dedication required in elite swimming.
