Jannik Sinner's remarkable 37-set winning streak at Masters 1000 events came to an end in Monte-Carlo, but the Italian still advanced to the quarter-finals with a 6-1 6-7(3) 6-3 victory over Tomas Machac. The world No. 2 had been perfect since last year's Paris Masters, including completing the Sunshine Double without dropping a set at Indian Wells and Miami.

Despite the setback, Sinner recovered to secure the win and continue his pursuit of Carlos Alcaraz at the top of the ATP rankings. 'Not every day is the same. I was struggling a little bit, I was a bit tired,' Sinner admitted after the match. The 22-year-old will face Felix Auger-Aliassime in the last eight after Casper Ruud retired while trailing 7-5 2-2.

Alcaraz also dropped a set but defeated Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-1 4-6 6-3 to defend his title. The Spaniard made 23 unforced errors in the second set but recovered to win. 'I was just feeling the ball really well in the first set,' Alcaraz said. With Sinner's potential title run threatening his No. 1 ranking, the pressure is mounting on the 21-year-old defending champion.
