Newey Promises Major Aston Martin Upgrade for Hungarian GP

Adrian Newey revealed Aston Martin will introduce a significant upgrade package at the Hungarian Grand Prix, aiming to address their poor start to the season. The team's struggles stemmed from designing the car late after Newey's March arrival and discovering flawed organizational processes. Weight issues particularly plagued development, with the chassis running heavy due to power unit integration challenges and insufficient optimization time.

Newey admitted the aerodynamic direction, largely his own call, created unexpected complications without adequate time to explore alternatives. The 67-year-old also disclosed coping with illness that affected his performance last year, though he praised the team's adaptability during his recovery. These factors combined to leave Aston Martin averaging 3.4 seconds off the pace this season.

The upgrade carries significant implications for Fernando Alonso's future, as the 45-year-old driver remains uncommitted beyond 2024. Newey emphasized the update is 'very important' for Alonso, who wants to see tangible progress before deciding whether to continue in F1. Despite pressure, Newey declined to quantify expected performance gains.

Long-term improvements depend on better simulation tools, which Newey says historically lacked proper investment. Honda engine upgrades are also planned for later this summer, potentially addressing the reported 50kW power deficit. Andy Cowell's impending departure as chief strategy officer signals further restructuring ahead.
