MPs have called for PE to become a core subject in schools and for the removal of 'no ball games' signs to boost physical activity across England. The Culture, Media and Sport Committee report highlights persistent financial pressure, limited facilities, and lack of national coordination as barriers to sport participation.

Recommendations include doubling sport funding from 0.3% to 0.6% of government expenditure over ten years and making PE mandatory for two hours weekly. The report also advocates for women's football to be exempt from Saturday afternoon broadcasting restrictions, citing evidence that televised women's sport inspires girls to be more active.

The MPs want a cross-government strategy to deliver a healthier nation and are concerned about potential changes to Sport England's statutory role in protecting playing fields. London Sport estimates that removing 'no ball games' signs could make 80 more children active per sign removed, affecting 560,000 Londoners currently deterred by such restrictions.
