New research commissioned by Sky reveals a significant disparity in weekly sports participation between girls and boys across the UK. While girls nationally play an average of 84 minutes less sport weekly, this gap fluctuates dramatically, ranging from nearly zero in Westmorland and Lonsdale to over 150 minutes in Birmingham Perry Barr.

The study, conducted by Public First, identifies urban areas as having the widest participation gaps, with girls missing nearly 100 minutes more sport weekly compared to boys. This disparity is linked to safety concerns, social barriers, and reduced access to organized sports facilities in these areas.

The findings suggest targeted interventions are necessary, particularly in areas with the lowest sports provision, where the gap is 46% wider. Sky's chief sports officer, Jonathan Licht, stressed the need to address inequalities in access and investment, especially within publicly funded settings.

Government efforts include a £400 million investment in facilities to improve access for underrepresented groups. This research strengthens the case for making equal sports access a legal requirement in publicly funded settings, aiming for lasting change.
