Julia Simon Wins Biathlon Gold After Fraud Conviction

Holding a finger to her mouth in a defiant gesture, French biathlete Julia Simon won Olympic gold in the women's 15km individual race. This victory comes less than four months after she received a three-month suspended prison sentence and a €15,000 fine for credit card fraud against a national teammate. Her victim, Justine Braisaz-Bouchet, finished 80th.

The 29-year-old admitted using Braisaz-Bouchet's and a physiotherapist's cards for online purchases totaling more than €2,000. The French Ski Federation imposed a six-month ban, with five months suspended, and a €30,000 fine, allowing her to compete in Milano-Cortina. She had already won gold in the mixed relay three days prior.

Simon's podium celebration was directed at a critic she saw in a "bad article," insisting, "I'm here for sports." The stark contrast between her criminal admission and her Olympic triumph leaves her legacy in biathlon, a sport where she has ten world titles, deeply complicated by the scandal that followed her to the finish line.
