The US Amateur Championship at Merion saw Jack Whaley become the second Englishman to triumph since 1911, defeating American Jay Leng Jr 4&3. Whaley, a 22‑year‑old Florida State University student, earned entry to the Masters, US Open and 2027 Open at St Andrews.

Whaley entered as a major underdog; Leng Jr ranks 23rd in the world amateur rankings, 67 places above the Doncaster native. After falling two strokes after the first 18 holes, Whaley rallied with back‑to‑back birdies on the second and third holes of his second round, then captured four consecutive holes. Rain in Pennsylvania kept both players in play, but a misread putt on the 12th gave Whaley a three‑hole lead, which he cemented with a decisive birdie Morena at 15.

He joins Matt Fitzpatrick (2013) as the latest English amateur to win the title, following Harold Hilton’s 1911 victory and Richie Ramsay’s 2006 win. Fitzpatrick’s 2022 US Open triumph at The Country Club underscores the potential legacy Whaley may pursue.

Former champions include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Bryson De Chambeau and Viktor Hovland, illustrating the tournament’s pedigree.
