Lewis Hamilton has criticized the new 2026 Formula 1 regulations as 'ridiculously complex,' saying fans won't understand the technical changes. The seven-time champion made the comments during pre-season testing in Bahrain, where he struggled with the increased energy management requirements of the new power units.

Hamilton explained that the engines now operate with a near 50-50 power split between internal combustion and electrical components, creating unprecedented complexity. He described having to learn intricate energy recovery strategies including lift-and-coast techniques and battery management during qualifying laps. The Mercedes driver noted that at tracks like Barcelona, drivers must lift off the throttle for 600 meters during qualifying laps.

Beyond the technical challenges, Hamilton faces a disrupted engineering setup with temporary race engineer Carlo Santi while Ferrari searches for a permanent replacement for Riccardo Adami. The 41-year-old admitted the situation is 'detrimental' as he enters his second season with the Italian team. Despite the criticism, Hamilton acknowledged that some energy management strategies were already in use last year, and teams are still learning about their new cars ahead of the season opener.
