Andy Farrell said signing a new Ireland contract was an easy decision after an extension to 2031. The 51‑year‑old’s previous deal ended after the 2027 Rugby World Cup, but the renewal keeps him in charge through the USA tournament. Since taking over in 2019, Farrell has delivered two Six Nations crowns, including the 2023 Grand Slam, and a series win over the All Blacks in New Zealand.

Ireland have Nations Championship fixtures in July and November before chasing the Six Nations crown next season. A summer tour will see them face Australia, Japan and New Zealand, giving uncapped players exposure. Core veterans such as Tadhg Furlong, Tadhg Beirne and Jack Conan are entering their early thirties, so the 2027 World Cup in Australia may be their last shot at the title.

The IRFU has shown overwhelming confidence, locking Farrell in until the end of the USA World Cup. He has already navigated the retirements of Johnny Sexton, Peter O’Mahony and Conor Murray, rebuilding a squad that can compete with the All Blacks and Springboks on tour. With his contract secured, Farrell can now concentrate on shaping the next generation and delivering a deeper World Cup run.
