England v Pakistan player ratings: Robinson stars

Ollie Robinson earned player-of-the-match honours as England beat Pakistan, taking career-best match figures of 8-80, including 5-51 in the first innings. The verdict: plug him in as attack leader for the next five Tests. Josh Tongue matched him with eight wickets, looking horrible to face once he found his rhythm after a poor start on day one.

Joe Root could not have wished for a better start to his second stint as captain, bringing calmness to the set-up while making 66. Harry Brook cruised to 91 from 93 balls while barely taking a risk, and Jordan Cox played with authority in making 73 at number three, pressing his case for a maiden international century. Emilio Gay made a breezy 33 but was caught nicking off for the fourth time in four Tests - a problem.

Dan Lawrence made 51 on his return, Jamie Smith fell for 25 but gained marks for an improved keeping performance, and Jofra Archer bowled better in the second innings after struggling with his lines.

Pakistan's batting was sub-standard. Azan Awais managed a first-ball duck and a 14-ball nine, Abdullah Shafique's 61 was the only fifty-plus score, and Salman Agha failed to inspire as stand-in captain. Spinner Ali Usman took 5-95 in a real mixed bag.
