England Re-hires Troy Cooley as Pace Coach

England has re-appointed Troy Cooley as its national pace-bowling lead, 20 years after his pivotal role in the historic 2005 Ashes victory. The 60-year-old Australian famously worked with the legendary attack of Steve Harmison, Matthew Hoggard, Andrew Flintoff, and Simon Jones. His return fills a long-standing void, as the senior team has lacked a dedicated fast-bowling coach since Jon Lewis departed in 2022.

Cooley's appointment follows England's recent hiring of fielding coach Carl Hopkinson, addressing issues exposed during the last Ashes tour. However, officials confirm Cooley's return is not directly linked to the 4-1 defeat in Australia. Instead, his role focuses on long-term development across the men's, Lions, and Young Lions teams, working above current elite coach Neil Killeen to rebuild England's pace-bowling pipeline.

Since leaving England in 2006, Cooley has honed his craft with Cricket Australia and India's national academy. His experience will be crucial as England's Test side, under Brendon McCullum, seeks to regain its competitive edge. While his time won't be solely dedicated to the first team, his expertise provides stability for a bowling unit that has relied on ad-hoc consultants like James Anderson and David Saker since 2022.
