Dean defends army camp for England squad cohesion

Stand‑in captain Charlie Dean said England’s 15‑player squad could afford to miss domestic fixtures for an army bootcamp, arguing the break helped the side “gel together”. The team withdrew from last week’s One‑Day Cup to attend the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and earlier training at Loughborough in preparation for next month’s T20 World Cup.

England have not played a competitive match since October, relying instead on winter training camps to sharpen tactics for the T20 World Cup this summer. Dean noted that missing a game or two feels negligible compared with the productive conversations and team building that occurred during the bootcamp. The focus was on cohesion, not stats.

With Nat Sciver‑Brunt nursing a calf injury, Dean will deputise as England captain for the first ODI series against New Zealand. The squad also faces a reshuffle: Alice Capsey is ill, Tammy Beaumont omitted, Sophia Dunkley rested, Danni Wyatt‑Hodge absent for maternity. Fresh faces like Tilly Corteen‑Coleman may earn debuts and offer a fresh dynamic lineup.

England’s return to competitive action comes on Sunday at Chester‑le‑Street, the first of three ODIs against New Zealand. Dean’s leadership will test the cohesion forged at Sandhurst, while the absence of key players forces the team to adapt quickly. Winning the World Cup remains the ultimate target for the squad.
