Colombian cyclist Cristian Camilo Munoz has died at age 30 from a knee infection sustained in a crash during the Tour du Jura one-day race in France. The NU Colombia rider did not finish the race after the accident and received initial medical treatment before travelling with his team to Spain for another competition.

Once in Oviedo, Munoz was admitted to hospital where medical staff detected a difficult-to-treat infection requiring specialist care. His condition deteriorated rapidly and, despite all efforts of the medical team, he passed away on Friday morning—six days after the crash.

Munoz previously rode for World Tour team UAE Team Emirates and finished fourth in the 2024 Colombian Road Race Championships. He won a stage of the under-23 Giro d'Italia in 2018. His team said: "Today we bid farewell Cristian Munoz, a cyclist who turned every kilometer into a show of passion, discipline and heart."

His death adds to growing concerns about safety in professional cycling. Switzerland's Muriel Furrer died after crashing at the 2024 Road World Championships, and Gino Mader was killed in a high-speed descent crash during the 2023 Tour de Suisse. The UCI introduced new safety protocols following these incidents.
