Plans to transform the world-leading Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, which first opened in 1964, are set to be approved by Bromley Council on Thursday. The scheme—spearheaded by the GLA and London's mayor Sir Sadiq Khan—includes a revamp of the athletics stadium, indoor arena, and swimming and diving facilities.

Planning officers have recommended approval, stating the proposal would "significantly enhance the quality of the existing sports provision." The application drew 390 supportive responses and 406 objections. Supporters welcomed reviving the "tired and dated" complex, with Sport England noting overwhelming support for modernization.

England Athletics and Volleyball England backed the project, while divers and water polo players hoped for restored facilities. However, England Hockey and the Football Foundation objected, arguing the shared multi-sport pitch would be insufficient. Climbing and motorsport communities also raised concerns about facility relocation and track alterations.

Officers said the historic racing circuit would remain "clearly recognisable," with only sections of Stadium Straight narrowed for additional outdoor facilities like 5-a-side football and 3v3 basketball.
