Ards FC's 'Ned' Leaves Mark on County Antrim Shield

Ahead of the County Antrim Shield final between Cliftonville and Carrick Rangers, the spotlight falls on a unique piece of Northern Irish football folklore. In 1994, after Ards’ surprise win over Crusaders, fan Michael 'Ned' Kennedy carved his name into the trophy.

That impromptu act turned into a decades-long quirk, with Ned’s name remaining engraved on the shield for over 30 years. The club had no proper display cabinet, so the trophy spent time in the clubhouse lounge. Ned used an indelible marker, a move teammates and fans later cherished.

The trophy’s informal modification became a symbol of fan passion during tough times, especially after Ards lost Castlereagh Park in 2000. Recently, officials removed Ned’s name to add a bar for easier lifting. Ards legend Roy Coyle’s era and European runs added to the lore. Now, Ned holds a unique legacy—his name is the only one removed from a senior trophy.
