Amy Hunt: Empowering Female Athletes Through Education

British sprinter Amy Hunt is using her platform to inspire female athletes to pursue university degrees while preparing for the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland. The 23-year-old Cambridge graduate gained attention after proclaiming that young girls can be both 'academic badasses and track goddesses' during her world 200m silver medal celebration in Tokyo.

Hunt's journey from record-breaking junior to world medalist has been marked by both triumph and challenge. She broke the under-18 200m world record in 2019 with a time of 22.42 seconds, but injuries including a ruptured quadriceps in 2022 disrupted her early senior career. Under coach Marco Airale in Padova, Italy, she has since improved to 22.08 seconds and recorded personal bests in both 60m and 100m.

Beyond athletics, Hunt is establishing a scholarship initiative to support athletes pursuing higher education, inspired by British rapper Stormzy's program for black students at Cambridge. 'Talking about it opens it up a lot more and enables more women and girls from an athletic background to be able to get there,' Hunt explains. As she competes in the 60m at the World Indoors - her least-favored event due to her 5ft 10in frame - Hunt continues balancing elite sport with her mission to empower the next generation of female athletes.
