Wales flanker Alex Mann has emerged as a defensive powerhouse in the 2026 Six Nations, setting a new tournament record with 33 tackles against Ireland in Dublin. The 23-year-old's performance surpassed previous marks set by Luke Charteris in 2015 and Guilhem Guirado in 2018, both achieved against the same Irish opposition.

Wales assistant coach Dan Lydiate, himself a former Six Nations player of the year, praised Mann's relentless work rate and tactical intelligence. "He's some talent and is a young man with a hell of an engine who reads the game really well on both sides of the ball," Lydiate said. With 76 total tackles, Mann currently leads the championship's tackle charts by three ahead of Dafydd Jenkins.

Mann's versatility extends beyond his defensive prowess, with coach Tandy highlighting his ball-playing abilities. "He's a massive ball player for us," Tandy noted, emphasizing the modern game's demand for forwards who can operate like backs. Despite strong competition from established names like James Botham and Taulupe Faletau, Mann has secured his place in Wales' back-row rotation, making his fifth Test start of the season. His consistent performances have established him as a cornerstone of Wales' defensive strategy heading into crucial summer fixtures.
