Women's FA Cup format changes shelved after backlash

The Women's FA Cup will retain its traditional format next season after widespread criticism of proposed changes. Plans to seed the top four WSL sides and eliminate draws from the fourth round onwards were first reported by the Guardian and would have prevented early matchups between the league's elite teams.

The FA had argued the changes would create "high-quality matches" and boost commercial potential, but supporters' groups strongly opposed the idea. Fan organizations from clubs including Brighton & Hove Albion, Fulham, and Everton argued the proposals would erode sporting merit and widen the gap between top teams and the rest of the pyramid.

Following the backlash, the FA announced it would extend the consultation period rather than implement changes immediately. The governing body acknowledged the competition's importance to clubs, players, and fans across all levels of women's football. The Women's FA Cup will continue its current structure, which mirrors the men's competition with teams entering at different stages based on their league position.
