VAR Challenge System Trials Expand Under Two-Year Review

Fifa referees' chief Pierluigi Collina has announced further trials of a challenge system as part of a two-year review of the video assistant referee (VAR). The International Football Association Board (Ifab) launched the review at its annual general meeting, marking the 10th anniversary of VAR's initial approval. Football Video Support (FVS) allows coaches two challenges per match and is already being tested in Italy, Malta, and Spain.

Collina, who chairs the referees' committee for world football's governing body, indicated these trials would expand to other member associations. "It is probable that in the next weeks we will open the possibility to join the trial for the next season to member association and competition organisers," he stated. The review comes as VAR faces increased scrutiny this season, with critics arguing the game would benefit without the technology.

The five-time world's best referee acknowledged VAR's current challenges, comparing it to a seven-year marriage crisis. "In Italy, we say that in every wonderful marriage, there is a crisis after seven years," Collina explained. His comments suggest football's authorities recognize the need to refine VAR implementation while maintaining faith in its long-term value to the sport.
