Rugby Booms in Football-Mad Argentina

Despite Argentina's deep-rooted passion for football, exemplified by Lionel Messi's success, rugby union is experiencing a significant surge in popularity. The national rugby team, the Pumas, have achieved consistent success, reaching three Rugby World Cup semi-finals in the last five tournaments. Head coach Felipe Contepomi, a veteran of the 2007 semi-final run, notes that "Amateur rugby here in Argentina is booming," with clubs growing and more people participating across all social classes, not just the traditional middle and upper classes.

While football remains a "religion" in Argentina, rugby's accessibility has expanded beyond its historical strongholds like Buenos Aires to every province. The development pathway for players has been bolstered by the semi-professional Super Rugby Americas, which has produced numerous players for the Pumas. Contepomi draws inspiration from Messi's "excellence, consistency and resilience" as the Pumas aim to break into the world's top four.

Argentina, currently ranked seventh, faces England this week. The Pumas have a challenging record against England, with only one win in their last 16 meetings. Logistical hurdles, including players competing in different hemispheres, have impacted team cohesion. However, with a potential bid to host the 2035 Rugby World Cup, the sport's growth in Argentina is poised for further acceleration.
