UEFA fines Villa and three English clubs over squad‑cost breaches

Aston Villa have been hit with a €22.5 million fine from UEFA for a “significant breach” of the 2025 squad‑cost rule. The sanction includes a ban on registering new players for next season’s Champions League and €15 million is suspended, contingent on the club cutting its squad‑cost ratio in 2026, and limits any new signings.

Four Premier League sides face penalties. Chelsea receive a €3 million fine, €2 million suspended, after selling Mathis Amougou to Strasbourg. Nottingham Forest must pay €2.5 million, while Newcastle United is fined €3 million and also settled a €10 million overspend on UEFA’s earnings threshold, with €7 million suspended. All clubs breached UEFA’s 70% income limit, tighter than the Premier League’s upcoming 85% allowance for non‑European teams.

The fines expose the clash between UEFA’s stricter financial regime and the Premier League’s more flexible rules. Clubs still competing in Europe must navigate the 70% cap, while domestic rivals can spend up to 85% of revenue. UEFA’s enforcement this season forces English teams to reassess transfer strategies and internal accounting practices. Failure to comply could trigger further sanctions, including deeper bans on European participation.
