Premier League clubs scramble to meet UEFA multi‑club deadline

As the Premier League tightens its race for Europe, clubs are scrambling to meet UEFA’s multi‑club ownership deadline of 1 March. Failure to prove independent control can see a side demoted, as Crystal Palace fell from the Europa League to the Conference League last season. Half of England’s top flight now sit under shared‑ownership structures, prompting lawyers for Everton, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest to file urgent compliance packages.

Everton’s link to Serie A side Roma has drawn particular scrutiny. Both clubs sit under the Friedkin Group, with US billionaire Dan Friedkin chairing Everton while also presiding over Roma. UEFA’s definition of “decisive influence” could deem the dual role a breach, forcing the Toffees to prove no operational overlap despite their narrow gap to a Europa League spot.

Chelsea and Strasbourg present another test case. Both belong to the BlueCo umbrella, and recent resignations of senior directors aim to satisfy the same 1 March rule. If UEFA allows both to qualify, player‑loan restrictions would likely apply until 2028. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest’s blind‑trust arrangement with Olympiakos remains under review after owner Evangelos Marinakis was removed as person of significant control.
