UEFA hands out financial penalties with Chelsea escaping major sanctions

Chelsea received a minimal €1m fine from UEFA on Tuesday after narrowly missing its stricter financial targets, while sister club Strasbourg faces the heaviest penalty of €13m among 14 sanctioned clubs. The French side, owned by Chelsea's holding company Blue Co, also received a deferred €12m fine and must significantly reduce player costs in 2026.

Aston Villa was ordered to pay €7.5m, representing a reduction from last year's €10.5m sanction. Chelsea's lighter punishment comes despite overspending over 70% of revenue on wages and transfers in 2025, though the club earned approximately $115m from FIFA and $90m in compensation deals. Juventus and Newcastle both accepted three-year settlements after missing break-even targets across three seasons.

Other penalties included €7m for Fenerbahce and €6m each for Newcastle, Juventus and Fiorentina, with Nottingham Forest fined €2.5m. UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations, established in 2009, continue generating debate over whether they protect established clubs while limiting ambitious newcomers.

The contrasting outcomes reflect different financial trajectories: Chelsea's Champions League absence next season follows a 10th-place Premier League finish, while Strasbourg earned roughly €15m from reaching the Conference League semifinals.
