Salisbury rejected VAR's advice to overturn the decision, only the 17th time in seven seasons a referee has ignored pitchside monitor recommendations. Referees in England already apply a more lenient handball standard than other nations, but Howard Webb told Forest that football's expectation would have been to disallow the goal.

James Bell's appointment as VAR for Fulham's home match against Newcastle has also drawn scrutiny after he failed to recommend a review of Kai Havertz's challenge on Lesley Ugochukwu on Monday. Salisbury's absence from the weekend slate reflects the fallout from the Forest controversy.
