Manchester United to complain to PGMO over Diallo penalty denial and Maguire red card

Manchester United will formally complain to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMO) head of referees, Howard Webb, following a controversial 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. The club is furious that Amad Diallo was denied a penalty in the box despite appearing to be fouled by Adrian Truffert, a decision Sky Sports understands is part of a pattern of VAR disputes this season. United were 1-0 up when Fernandes converted a penalty, and expected to double their lead had the second spot-kick been awarded.

Bournemouth's Ryan Christie equalized moments later. To add to United's anger, Harry Maguire was sent off for a foul on Evanilson, while Truffert escaped punishment for an "identical" challenge on Diallo, according to manager Michael Carrick. Carrick stated it was "crazy" and "baffling" that the referee awarded one penalty but not the other, claiming the game would have been "totally different" had the second penalty been given.

Fernandes echoed this, questioning why VAR didn't intervene in what he described as a similar situation where one penalty was rewarded and the other not. While pundit Jamie Redknapp argued the Truffert challenge was "incredibly harsh" and not sufficient for a penalty, United's loss of two points leaves them fighting for a Champions League place, potentially costing them an eighth win in 10 league games.
