Referee Panel Backs No-Penalty Call on Amad Diallo

The Premier League's Key Match Incidents Panel has ruled that referee Stuart Attwell and VAR Craig Pawson were correct not to award a penalty to Manchester United's Amad Diallo during their 1-1 draw at Bournemouth last month. The panel's split 3:2 vote concluded that Bournemouth defender Adrien Truffert's contact with Diallo, while risky, did not meet the high threshold for a foul.

United were left furious as Bournemouth immediately counter-attacked and scored through Ryan Christie in the 67th minute. The incident proved pivotal, turning a potential 2-0 lead into a 1-1 draw at Vitality Stadium. Manager Michael Carrick expressed bafflement at the inconsistency, pointing out that an earlier penalty was awarded for a similar holding offense when Alex Jimenez pulled Matheus Cunha's shirt.

The panel unanimously supported the non-VAR intervention, stating it aligned with the high threshold for overturns. While two panellists believed a penalty should have been awarded, the majority ruled the contact was not impactful enough. Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer criticized the decision, arguing consistency demanded a penalty when similar incidents were penalized earlier in the game.
