Anti-discrimination body Kick It Out has reported a record 1,255 incidents of discrimination in English football during the 2025-26 season, a significant rise from the previous year.

Racism remains the most prevalent issue, with 792 cases, alongside increases in homophobia, sexism, ableism, antisemitism, and Islamophobia. Kick It Out's chief executive, Samuel Okafor, stated that tougher sanctions are necessary to address discrimination, which he believes is "deeply ingrained" but also a reflection of wider societal issues.

Player Umar Ali shared a personal experience of racial and Islamophobic abuse during a match, highlighting the distress caused and a perceived lack of action from officials. His manager, Mohammed Patel, echoed the call for stronger, top-down measures, criticizing the £300 fine and disciplinary points issued to the opposing club as insufficient.

The FA has stated it has introduced tougher sanctions and a new behaviour improvement program for the grassroots game, aiming to penalize repeated offenders.
