Morton Financial Crisis: Sponsorship Loss Threatens Club Future

Greenock Morton faces severe financial strain after major sponsor Dalrada reduced payments, creating a cash flow crisis at Cappielow. The Championship club, community-owned for five years via Morton Club Together, has seen volunteer directors resign and a £750,000 investment from multi-club group Estrella withdrawn last week. Estrella cited significant deterioration in Morton's situation "both financially and on the pitch" since March. General manager Darren Henderson acknowledged November will be "a bit tight" but insisted it's "not doom and gloom just yet." A fighting fund raised over £27,000 in 48 hours, providing "a little breathing space." Dalrada's sponsorship began in June 2023 worth £540,000, with a further £240,000 committed in September before payment reductions.

On the pitch, Morton have lost all seven matches this season. A 93rd-minute winner for Arbroath condemned them to a third Championship defeat, though 16-year-old Dean Black impressed with a stunning 25-yard equalizer. Teenagers Rocco Murphy, 17, and five other youngsters featured, offering hope that youth development could provide a pathway forward amid the turmoil.
