Michael McArdle Named Northern Ireland Women's Manager

The Scottish FA's head of elite women's football Michael McArdle has been appointed manager of Northern Ireland's women's national team. McArdle, who previously served as Scotland's interim head coach, replaces Tanya Oxtoby and will take charge on 1 April. His appointment ends a four-month search following Oxtoby's move to Newcastle United.

McArdle brings extensive experience from the Scottish FA, including managing youth teams and overseeing talent development pathways. During his brief spell as Scotland's interim manager last year, he oversaw four Nations League A matches - all defeats - as the team searched for a permanent coach. His background with Scotland's under-17 and under-19 squads aligns with Northern Ireland's focus on developing young talent.

The 46-year-old Glaswegian faces immediate challenges in World Cup qualifying, with Northern Ireland sitting third in their group after opening defeats to Switzerland and Turkey. McArdle must address the team's goalscoring struggles in the absence of striker Simone Magill and build upon the defensive foundation established by interim manager Kris Lindsay.
