Sprinters Thomas Young and Sophie Hahn captured England’s first athletics golds at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on opening night in Glasgow. Young, celebrating his 26th birthday, won the men’s 100m T38 in a Games record time of 11:11 seconds, a season best that made his return from a 2022 injury a triumph. Hahn beat Wales captain Olivia Breen to take the women’s 100m T38 in 12:79, with teammate Maddie Down earning bronze at 12:86. “It’s very special,” Hahn said, recalling her 2018 Games win.

British champion Sam Bennett took silver in the men’s 110m hurdles, clocking a personal best of 13:30, while Jamaica’s Demario Prince edged him for gold. Kimani Jack added bronze in the men’s high jump with a 2.20m clearance, behind Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford’s 2.25m. In the women’s 800m, Olympic silver medallist Georgia Hunter Bell led the first‑round heat in 2:02.61, ahead of Scotland’s Jemmie Reekie, signalling a strong start for her debut.
