Torrential rain turned the Commonwealth Games athletics in Glasgow into a test of endurance. England's Amy Hunt won 100m silver despite being "slathered up in deep heat," while Australia's Eleanor Patterson wore a tartan scarf between jumps. Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme powered through to win the men's 100m in a Games-record 9.83 seconds, the third-fastest time this year.

Conditions grew absurd as hammer throws slipped from wet hands and thunder cracked overhead. Uganda's Samuel Simba Cherop lost a shoe and ran 15 laps in a soggy sock, finishing seventh.
