Mexico FMF Threatens World Cup Squad Cuts Over Training Camp Dispute

The Mexican Football Federation delivered an ultimatum to Liga MX players on Wednesday, warning that anyone skipping the World Cup training camp will be excluded from the 2026 squad. Javier Aguirre selected 20 domestic players, with 12 guaranteed spots, for the camp that runs outside FIFA's international window.

The timing creates a direct clash with Liga MX play-offs and Concacaf Champions Cup semi-finals, including Toluca's second leg against LA FC. Toluca requested to keep players for their continental tie, while Chivas already released five players despite their own play-off commitments.

Chivas president Amaury Vergara emphasized that agreements require mutual respect, but ultimately confirmed his players would attend. Coach Aguirre left no room for negotiation: "whoever doesn't come will be out of the World Cup."

The standoff reveals tension between club ambitions and national team preparations ahead of Mexico's co-hosted tournament. With warm-up matches scheduled against Ghana and Australia before facing South Africa on June 11, squad cohesion becomes critical for Mexico's World Cup aspirations.
