Jonathan Gjoshe Stabbed Seven Times in Train Attack Interview

Footballer Jonathan Gjoshe has revealed he was stabbed seven times during the mass knife attack on an LNER train travelling through Cambridgeshire last November. "I got stabbed on the shoulder first," he tells BBC Sport. "I remember jumping over the table, jumping over the chairs. I was just running down the corridor, telling people, 'there's a guy with a knife, run'." The knife went through his muscles in his bicep, shoulder and arm, coming fractionally close to hitting a nerve.

Gjoshe pulled the alarm and got off at Huntingdon station, where armed police were waiting. Given first aid by a fellow passenger, he was rushed to hospital and only learned after surgery the full extent of his injuries. He faced several months of rehabilitation, returning to full training in March - describing it as "a big relief". The 32-year-old attacker Anthony Williams has been charged with 10 counts of attempted murder and is due to stand trial in October.

The attack came just as Gjoshe's career was ascending. He had joined Scunthorpe from Corinthian Casuals last September - his "big break" after jumping four tiers in the football pyramid. However, he was among several players not retained by the club in May. "Obviously with everything I've been through, I missed half a season... I didn't get that chance that I wanted," he says. Scunthorpe fans raised £4,500 via GoFundMe to support him. Now "fully healed and ready for whatever challenge comes through", he hopes a club will give him another opportunity.
