EFL urged to adopt three promotion places

National League chief executive Phil Alexander has renewed calls for the English Football League to implement a three-up, three-down promotion system. Rochdale recently secured promotion by beating Boreham Wood on penalties at Wembley after mounting a comeback from two goals down following their remarkable 106-point league campaign.

Alexander believes the change makes sense as the National League has become virtually fully professional with minimal standard difference to League Two. Evidence supports this view, with Bromley winning League Two two years after promotion, while Notts County and Chesterfield contested both the 2023 National League final and this season's League Two play-offs.

The proposal was only listed as a discussion topic at an EFL meeting in March, meaning it cannot be implemented for another year. Alexander fears EFL clubs will delay the change until the Premier League reaches a funding agreement. He hopes the Football Regulator, chaired by David Kogan, will resolve what he calls the National League being "on a bit of an island" in the football pyramid structure.
