Rory McIlroy's Ragged Open Round

Rory McIlroy acknowledged that "too many stupid mistakes" hindered his opening round at the Open Championship, resulting in a rollercoaster 72. This score leaves him seven shots behind the unexpected leader, Jackson Suber. McIlroy, aiming to add a second Claret Jug to his collection, experienced a frustrating day on Royal Birkdale's greens, making four birdies but also six bogeys.

Key to his struggles were several missed putts, including three within four feet in a span of four holes from the seventh. He also mixed three birdies with two bogeys on par-fives in his final six holes. "The two bogeys on the par-fives weren't great and I struggled the first two holes to get the speed of the greens," McIlroy stated, noting perceived inconsistency in the green conditions.

Despite the difficult start, McIlroy, the 2014 Open champion, remains optimistic about his chances. He referenced his recovery at the 2025 Masters and believes he can contend, especially if he capitalizes on potentially better conditions during his Friday tee time. "Hopefully I can take advantage of the more benign conditions in the morning and shoot under par and get back in it," he expressed.
